Your vehicle is one of the least environmentally efficient products you own. Cars are notorious for destroying our environment. I’m sure this is no news to you, but it cannot be enforced enough. There are several things you can do to be more green when driving. First things first though, try to find alternatives for driving. Take the public transit when you can, or carpool. Walk/bike wherever you can, if it’s nearby, it’s both healthy for you and the environment. Buy a hybrid vehicle if possible, this will save you money on gas and save the environment from death.
Slow down. Drive at around 55 miles per hour. This is the most energy-efficient driving speed, and you will save gas this way. Keep your tires properly inflated as well. Your engine uses 20% of its effort overcoming tire resistance. This increases when your tires are not properly inflated, so this is something you should definitely check up! Also, try not to push the pedal to the medal. This goes for the accelerator and for the brakes! Drive carefully, and safely, you will save gas!
If you are letting your engine run idle for more than a minute, you should just turn your car off. It takes the same amount of gas to turn your engine on, as an idle engine for one minute. So just turn your engine off and wait, you will save gas. Also, carry less load in your car. Is there anything you don’t need in your trunk? Well, you don’t need it in your trunk, so take it out!
Cars end up being some of the most expensive products we own. From the purchase, to insurance, to gas. Gas prices aren’t going down any time soon, and neither is the effect of gas on the environment, so avoid using your gas and drive smart, and carefully!
